Writing Across the Curriculum
A Document for Instructional and Literacy Coaches
Imagine every teacher in a school sharing common language, the same metaphors
for teaching the fundamentals of the writing process! All teachers work together to improve and reinforce students' schema for what it means to create a focused thesis statement and to support it with appropriate ideas, sentences, paragraphs.
When a
student enters math class, science, social studies, physical education,
art, and/or music, each teacher uses the same terms to instruct students. All teachers should be responsible for reading and writing because students need to be able to write knowledgeably about science, sports, music, art, and math. Writing is not the strict domain of the English teacher.
What if parents used the
same bank of terms when reading/reviewing their students papers at home?
The three documents in the frames were developed by me for teachers in some of
the middle and high schools I served as a literacy coach. In some schools, the teachers
worked with a computer teacher to make the PowerPoint more user friendly
for parents and teachers.
Feel free to set up a wiki and revise the documents to suit your
situation. P.S I had to save the script for the PowerPoint in a separate
document (compatibility issues).
