Towards A Common Language:
Writing A Thesis Statement Across the Curriculum

A Guide for Instructional and Literacy Coaches

What if every teacher in a school shared a common language, the same vocabulary for teaching writing? How would that improve student achievement? When a student enters  math class, science, social studies, physical education, art, music, each teacher uses the same terms to instruct students on how to develop a thesis statement and supporting sentences. What if parents used the same bank of terms when reading their students papers at home?

The three documents in the frames were developed by me for teachers in some of the middle and high schools I served as a coach. In some schools, the teachers worked with a computer teacher to make the PowerPoint  more user friendly for parents and teachers. Feel free to set up a wiki and revise it to suit your situation. P.S I had to save the script for the PowerPoint in a separate document (compatibility issues).

A Coach's Guide to Asset-Mapping Teacher Quality:
The Journey from Compliance to Community

The journey begins at a place called “compliance” and ends at a destination named “community.” During three “stops” on the journey, eighteen principles in three core areas critical to teacher quality and classroom practices are examined. The system promotes acknowledgment and affirmation of the abilities, skills, and capacities within the school that can be leveraged for teachers to support one another and build an assets-based system for professional development. It is a job-embedded, ongoing, and formative approach to teacher support.
The workbook contains proven time-saving worksheets, templates, workshop ideas and materials, one-on-one teacher activities – all created by an experienced coach.
